Motivated Seller! Very Motivated Seller!

3/30/2010 9:30PM CST:
Left Photo of rear view of "Exquisite Waterfront Home with Views Galore!"
At this point, we've lived in the St. Louis area for approximately 9 months. We still own a house in the New Orleans area that is on the market, and are renting a 3-story townhouse until our house has sold. Well, now that we have a baby on the way, we're not as excited about having three floors to continue to climb throughout the day. We're also ready for a more permanent (and a little more remote) house towards the country. Maybe it is nesting, but we're a bit anxious to begin seriously searching for our next house, where we see ourselves raising this child.
So, on the plus side, we have a couple coming to take a second look at our house tomorrow evening. That sounds more promising than anything I'd heard in several months. Now that we're nearing the end of the first trimester, we can feel the clock ticking. We know we need to have moved into something more permanent by then.
PS - If anyone seems extremely interested in the beautiful waterfront home, by all means contact me directly. Never hurts to throw that out there!

Sunday Driver

3/28/2010 10:03PM CST:

Left photo of abandoned barn on road near Robbie's mother's house, Curryville, MO.

I drove Robbie mid-way to his mother's house on Thursday night, where his brother picked him up and drove the rest of the way. He picked up his kids on Friday and had them through the weekend, so that they could do Easter weekend - although that is actually next week.

While Robbie was away, I worked most of the time... had church on Sunday morning... finished the novel I was reading... explored a love for bluegrass music... and generally did very little otherwise.

While it had rained much of the weekend, even up until after church today, the sky opened up and made for a beautiful drive to the country today. I was able to spend a few hours at his mom's with the kids, before driving them back home, and returning us back to the St. Louis area this evening. It's been a long day... at least the country scenery and bluegrass music made for an ambient afternoon. Great seeing the kids.

Wined and Dined

3/23/2010 9:19PM CST:
Left photo of one of the smaller cellars at Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, Missouri.
We had a wonderful day yesterday touring through Missouri wine country. We sampled wine looking out over vineyards and rivers from beautiful hilltops on a clear day.
We also are now 10 weeks + pregnant. It seems like the end of the first trimester just drags on ever so slowly. While we have told some family and friends about the pregnancy, we certainly haven't come out to the world about it. As soon as another 2 weeks 5 days have passed, we'll be much more public - I guess we'll follow tradition there.

Baby Booty Cheeks

03/17/2010 8:38PM CST:

3D Imaging and Ultrasound of our Bebe as of 3/17/2010.

Jessie had her first OB appointment yesterday, and got some amazing video and photos of our little Bebe (we pronounce it "beeb"). So far Bebe is behaving just like its Dad, turning away from the camera and showing off its little booty cheeks. Both pictures are facing away from camera, although I understand the video may show Bebe reaching up for its face as well. So now we know, our little Bebe no longer resembles okra.

Some things we'll want to remember from around this time:

  • We celebrated St. Patrick's Day until late last night, having large beers and Shamrock shots until a little bit too late.
  • We are hoping for a sunny day on Monday to drive out to historic Hermann, Missouri.
  • I have a meeting for a group on women's reproductive justice on Saturday.
  • We are staring at Bebe's pictures an awful lot, and wonder what it's doing...

What's Up Doc?

Our First Look

3/14/2010 3:24PM CST:
Left picture taken from my (Mike's) perspective at the first OB ultrasound.
I will be posting more pictures from ultrasound as I get them scanned and loaded. We consider ourselves so fortunate to be able to able to see things as they develop so early.
During this visit, Dr. Zeringue and Su conducted the ultrasound. I held up Jessie's daughter on the chair, so she could see and be next to Mom. Robbie stood behind me video recording and crying. What a neat appointment! We saw a very distinct healthy heartbeat. Bebe was at 159 beats per minute, and the ultrasound estimated bebe's size to within a day. All seems well so far.

California Dreamin'

3/12/2010 11:05PM CST:

Left photo of Robbie and Jessie at our favorite chain restaurant that doesn't exist in the Midwest, Johnny Carino's.

When the picture was taken, nobody knew the extent to which my little tiny flash on my BlackBerry was vibrant. That little light is wicked and blinding... smile!

We're really missing California. We always have such a great time hanging out with Jessie. It's also a very strange feeling to travel back and be far away from our little bebe, but it's also very comforting to know that it's well taken care of and in good hands (and uterus).

Guess What We Saw on TV

3/10/2010 11:00PM CST:
Left photo of me (Mike). Because the flight was rather long to San Francisco, I got bored. After using the airplane restroom, it seemed a good idea to pass some time trying to preserve the moment in photograph.
Just returned from the ultrasound visit in Davis, CA. We are the proud parents-to-be of a healthy singleton. Heartbeat was strong and steady - size of the bebe was right on track. We couldn't be happier! More to come...

What Happened on Transfer Day?

3/3/2010 10:20PM CST:

Left Picture of Jessie taken in the waiting room of California IVF on 1/31/2010.

Robbie and I are starting to get organized in preparation for our trip to California for the heartbeat ultrasound. We will fly to California on 3/6 and have our appointment on 3/8. We are very excited about the ultrasound appointment, but sad that this is the last scheduled appointment we will have with California IVF.

We were extremely fortunate to have come across the California IVF office in Davis, California, and we actually did so by accident. Initially, we quickly agreed to move ahead with Jessie, but were all still discerning a great deal about the surrogacy process. I first contacted California IVF on a Saturday afternoon, and happened to reach a nurse that was available over the weekend. She was kind enough to answer my preliminary questions and phone me back that day with answers she was unable to provide at the time. I spoke with Su, the donor/third-party coordinator, and she was very kind and patient. She answered my silly questions, patiently walked me through cycles, procedures, and a world of things which were new to me. I learned for the first time that day that gestational surrogacy and egg donation were not an unapproachable process, and were quite accessible to all us. For the first time in this process, I felt as though we had a professional stepping in to guide us.

Both doctors, Dr. Zeringue and Dr. Lovely, spent a great deal of time with us during consultations and procedures. They have sent us emails of encouragement. They've made this process fun for us - we've laughed a lot with them. Tara and the nurse staff always seemed to be available to answer our questions. The embryology team at California was nothing less than impressive. Deborah, the senior embryologist, was kind enough to hold an egg class for me to walk me through the entire scientific process. From the date of the retrieval through the transfer and preservation of remaining embryos, Lisa and Deborah remained in constant contact. I received phone calls letting me know about the eggs, fertilization rates, number of cells formed, and ultimately the number of viable day 5 blastocysts. Overall, 20 eggs were retrieved, 17 fertilized, and at day 5: 2 transferred and 12 additional frozen. 14 blastocysts resulted from 20 eggs - extremely impressive!

California IVF was an office where the staff hugged us on the way in and out, and helped us laugh and have fun throughout this wonderful journey - we will miss having our appointments there.

So looking back on the day of the transfer, there were a few things we'd like to remember that we'd never written down:
  • It was very foggy during the morning in Salida, California. When I picked up Jess, she was not wearing make-up.
  • We stopped at the gas station. I had a Diet Rockstar (it was terrible and huge), and Jessie started a big bottle of Smart Water. She began putting on makeup during the drive.
  • We listened to the Owl City CD in the car, both ways. There was no fog by the time we were in Sacramento.
  • By the time we were in the California IVF office, I really had to pee, but Jessie had to hold it in.
  • We took pictures beginning in the waiting room.
  • We met Doctor Lovely for the first time. While we thought she looked extremely serious in her picture, we were surprised to find out how much fun she was to work with! We had a great time with her.
  • We danced to the overhead music in the room of the transfer while we waited. It helped Jessie not think about peeing.
  • When no one was watching, we went into the specimen collection room across the hall. Of course, I had seen it twice before - it was a first for Jessie.
  • We signed a lot of things. We were so glad Deborah was there.
  • The transfer was very fast.
  • Tara gave me a princess wand before we left.
  • We ate at Chevy's immediately afterward (it was Funday Sunday with guacamole made table-side for $3 - it was our third time eating Chevy's in a week).
  • I drove us back to Salida, and Jessie napped a bit.
  • It was still foggy when we arrived in Salida.
  • We wandered through Babies R' Us.
  • I learned to play Guitar Hero that afternoon, and we ate at Elephant Bar that night. There was a reunion of surrogates and intended parents taking place in the back room of the restaurant that night, but we didn't know it until afterwards.
I don't suppose this is the kind of stuff you put in a baby book, right?

"Going Through the Motions"

3/2/2010 10:20 PM CST:

I have been having dreams of Robbie and I raising a daughter. I've had a few of these lately - not surprising considering how much we think or talk about this. In these visions of the future daughter, I've pictured a girl that loves music. She is witty and kind, is concerned with injustice and oppression and making the world better, and still has inner-strength. I realized I had pictured all along raising Buffy in the episode "Once More With Feeling!"
